Order in the Chaos

Set in the year 2523, centred around the discovery of a typewriter deep in Lumsdale Valley, this project seeks to reconnect people through face-to-face communication and the traditional craft of weaving.

In this fictional future, people have become dependent on AI technology to communicate with one another, so when the typewriter is found, its use is alien to them. As a result, they begin to use it to create patterns and weave with them to form tapestries. The community aim to create a sense of calm and order in the chaos that AI has brought to the world.

The re-design of these three derelict mills is inspired by the shapes seen on the typewriter and patterns created with the characters. A change in scale explores the depth and potential of these patterns. A steel garden path, in which the community grow their own food, weaves through the buildings connecting them all together and leading people on a journey through the site.

BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design

Interior Architecture and Design at NTU has an incredibly long and rich history; with Interior Decoration taught at the first ever UK Art school, in the Waverley building during the 1950s.

Over the last 70 years, our programme has grown and adapted to meet the requirements of industry and social change, respond to trends, and deliver a degree which encourages students to look, think, critically appraise, and understand local and world issues amongst the principles of design.

We are a validated degree programme in which our students can join the Chartered Society of Designers, and we are members of the Interior Educators network. Our dedicated design studio in the Grade II* listed Arkwright building enables a studio culture which reflects professional practice, in a dynamic environment that challenges everyone to work collaboratively, share experiences and experiment with ideas.
