Skate Ed

This project is all about creating an education centre which focuses on Skateboarding in the city of Nottingham. The skateboarding scene in Nottingham is growing every day and which I have witnessed throughout the past three years, and I wanted to show what is happening all around the world and how other countries are doing to try and make skateboarding to be seen as a real sport by creating skateboarding education centres. The centre will allow for students to learn all about skateboarding and the different aspects such as the history of skateboarding and how skateboards are made, they will learn how to create businesses and how to start designing for their own brands, over the three years that they will be located here they will try and grow their brands and names in the skateboarding industry. I want the students to have plenty of freedom when here, they have many areas where they can go and relax, the roof top garden which looks over the canal and river Trent with amazing views and the balcony which can be used to have lunch or sit downs with friends. Also, the pavilion on the island part of the site which can be used for relaxing or even for skateboarding.

When designing this education space, I mainly wanted to focus of the skateboarding aspect and try to design a park for different types of skaters, so I designed a basic park which will still be fun for more experienced skateboarders on the inside park and the exterior park has a few harder obstacles which is for more experienced skaters, both parks will be open to the public to use and can be opened up to each other to allow for a better flow in the two parks and creates a cool skate area. The skate shop within the space will be open to the public for people in the area to go and get whatever they need for their boards or even clothing needs. My favourite thought throughout this project was the cinema space which I added, this idea involved that every year the students will start to create a skate film and at the end of every year there will be a showing and anyone can go to it, this is something many people in Nottingham would love to go to and I feel the Nottingham skate scene should do something like this.

The reason why I wanted to do a skate school is because it’s something I am very passionate about and thought that no one else will be doing something like this as no one else skates on the course. I thought it would be a good idea for me to do because it is something that I know a lot about and if I need to know something about skateboarding, I have many friends who have a great skateboarding knowledge so is easy for me to get the information. Throughout this project I wanted to keep the design very simple and not confuse the building by trying to make some crazy design and complicate the design for myself, I used the sites lines to create this building and then took the design from there. Started to think what skateboarders like which is mainly being outside but also a bacon and egg cob, so I wanted to add a café in the building and allow for many different seating areas all over the site.

Overall, I wanted to bring new eyes to skateboarding as you look through my work and hopefully see the sport in a new like and will start noticing the different areas where skaters go and how Nottingham has grown to accept skateboarding as a whole.
